Dentures are the standard treatment for replacing some or all your missing teeth because they provide so many benefits. These versatile restorations are customized to look as lifelike as possible and allow you to eat, speak, and smile more confidently.

Today, these prosthetics are made from comfortable materials and fit like a glove, so they’re more stable and comfortable. However, that hasn’t always been the case! Continue reading to learn more about the fascinating evolution of dentures and why now’s an ideal time to get them.

Historic Humans

If you’re considering rebuilding your grin with dentures, you’re not alone! An estimated 40.99 million Americans reported using them in a 2020 U.S. Census. However, if you were to count all the people who have ever used these prosthetics, the count would be much higher! These replacements trace their roots to the Etruscan people of ancient northern Italy. Around 700 BC, they were made with human or animal teeth tied together with gold wires.

Because these materials were rare and not overly durable, experts believe these initial attempts were probably more cosmetic than functional.

Expanding Influences

Over time, various cultures experimented with different replacement teeth made from valuable local resources like metal, gold, gemstones, and even gemstones. In the 1700s and 1800s, you could find dentures made from ivory or wood, but these typically gave off a foul smell and were considered uncomfortable to wear. Then, as sugar consumption increased in Europe and dental health declined, demand for replacement teeth skyrocketed. One gruesome but popular source was from the bodies of soldiers that fell in battle.

Then, around 1820, a silversmith in Britain mounted porcelain teeth onto gold plates with springs and swivels, which many consider to be the first modern set of dentures.

Rubber Restorations

In the mid-1800s, the Goodyear family developed a hardened form of rubber called vulcanite. This was adapted for oral use because it could be molded to fit a patient’s gums and wasn’t as easily damaged as porcelain. This material was the standard until the 20th century, when acrylic resin was developed.

Contemporary Creations

Thanks to ongoing developments in dental technology, materials, and techniques, today these teeth are more reliable and realistic than ever before. Your dentist utilizes state-of-the-art equipment and durable, tooth and gum-colored materials to rebuild your grin. Plus, your prosthetics are customized at every stage of their creation so you know that your smile is one-of-a-kind.
