Modern dentures are lifelike enough for casual observers not to notice them and comfortable enough for their wearers to sometimes forget that they’re even there. While they are certainly a great way to restore a smile after extensive tooth loss, they also require proper care and maintenance in order to work properly and keep their beautiful appearance. Here’s how to care for your dentures so they function well, fit comfortably, and look great for the long haul.
How Should I Care for My Dentures?
Dentures are fragile and must be handled properly if they are to stay in working order. It’s important to be careful when handling them. You should always remove and rinse your dentures with warm water after eating or drinking to keep food debris from accumulating on them. After you remove them, you should also clean your natural teeth, gums, cheeks, palate, and tongue using toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Be sure to remove any remaining denture adhesive from your gums if you use any.
Just like real teeth, dentures require a daily cleaning regimen in order to stay in good shape, and they should be brushed at least once daily. Before you do this, fold a towel across the bathroom countertop and fill the sink with warm water to provide a cushion in case you drop your appliance. Using warm water and an approved nonabrasive denture cleanser, gently brush your dentures to remove plaque, food debris, and other deposits. Take care to remove any lingering adhesive and remember that toothpaste is too abrasive for dentures.
How Should I Soak My Dentures?
Wearing dentures all day is hard work for your gums. Accordingly, you should remove and soak your dentures for at least eight hours every day. Most people soak their dentures before they go to bed. This will give your mouth time to rest and clean itself, preventing the accumulation of food particles and bacteria that can lead to bad breath and oral infections.
Your dentures can warp or crack if they dry out, which can require costly repairs or replacement. When you soak your dentures for the night, do so in water or an approved denture-soaking solution. Be sure to rinse your dentures thoroughly before you place them back in your mouth. Swallowing denture solution can lead to vomiting, pain, or burns.
It’s also important to remember to never boil or soak your dentures in hot water, as this can deform and ruin them. With proper care and maintenance, your dentures can last for up to ten years.
