What Are Invisalign Refinements?

Though your dentist’s estimate for how long your Invisalign journey will take is usually very accurate, there are sometimes cases when a patient may need a little more time for their smile to finish aligning. This may require additional aligners or other revisions to their care known as refinements. Here’s what you need to know about these changes, and how to reduce your odds of needing them!

The Benefits of Invisalign Aligners

While having a beautiful, perfectly aligned smile is certainly a major benefit of Invisalign, there are many other reasons to choose this innovative orthodontic treatment. Invisalign is typically found to be more comfortable, easier to care for, and more discreet than traditional braces. It’s also frequently a much faster treatment. But on occasion, it may take longer than estimated, requiring what is known as an Invisalign refinement.

What are Invisalign Refinements

An Invisalign refinement is simply another way to say a change to your original treatment plan. It could mean you need a few additional sets of aligners, or perhaps an accessory like rubber bands or “bumps” that are attached to your teeth to hold your aligners in place. Not everyone will need refinements, nor will those who do need the same refinements, or require them for the same duration of time.

Dealing With Setbacks During Invisalign Treatment

Though Invisalign treatment usually concludes within 12 to 18 months, sometimes it can take a bit longer than anticipated, causing frustration for the patient. Thankfully, these inconvenient delays can sometimes be avoided by following your care instructions closely. Always be sure to:

  • Wear your aligners for at least 22 hours each day
  • Brush and floss your teeth each time you eat
  • Don’t wear your aligners while eating or drinking anything but water
  • Replace your aligners as scheduled
  • Stay on track with your regular dental exams
  • Let your dentist know if you experience any unusual discomfort, your aligner becomes damaged, or if it does not fit properly

Remember, while it’s understandable to be eager to complete your Invisalign treatment and show off your beautiful smile, part of being a responsible patient is being a “patient patient.” Thus, to ensure that your treatment is a success, follow your plan as closely as possible, anticipate changes, and be flexible. Soon you’ll have a gorgeous new grin to showcase for all your efforts!
